Her story......
Well now you know a bit about our Jessie, our loving, best mate, for the last 16 years, but 3 years ago we thought we would have to say goodbye.
Returning home from work late on a Saturday afternoon, the family had her wrapped in a blanket in her pod. She had lost the use of her back legs. Completely. The only way she could move was by using her front legs to drag herself around.
It was too late to get her into the vets that night and as it is with these kind of injuries, we knew it was important to start treatment as fast as we could.

It was too late to get her into the vets that night and as it is with these kind of injuries, we knew it was important to start treatment as fast as we could.
By using the Tissue Salt (Biochemic) Therapy , it was possible to start anti inflammatory work immediately. Tissue Salts (or Cell Salts) are taken up through the mucosa in the mouth, and are best delivered to animals dissolved in water. As you may have gathered Jess doesn't have a problem with anything in her food bowl, so it was easy to start that straight away. |
Emmett and Bowen Therapy, work with the fascia and connective tissue throughout the body which helps the body to auto regulate to its natural healthy state. It has extensive protocols for back and hip release work. As Jess was already distressed, only a minimal amount of work was used to start the fascial release work. A lot of rest and restricted movement was then required.
Just as in humans, rest and giving the body time to heal and focus its resources on injury is an essential part of the healing process. She rested well during the night, and tissue salts were given again the next day. |
We were able to get an appointment with our Vet first thing Monday morning. She diagnosed a slipped disc and given the amount of time between injury and getting her to the surgery, our Vet was not optimistic about the usual emergency treatment being effective.
Over the following days, under the supervision of our Vet Low Intensity Laser Therapy was introduced, and only a few minutes per treatment at a very low dose, so as not to stress an already overloaded nervous system. Using more powerful lasers can be quite overwhelming for animals. |
Within a couple of days, Jess had started to show signs of using her legs again. By the second week, she was able to push herself up, stand and move around a little. The Vet cautioned on too much movement, so Jess was taken everywhere in her Pod, and carried outside for fresh air, sunshine and pee breaks. And naturally, a new nick name..... J 'opatra ......
|
By 3 weeks she was walking around, albeit slowly and very cautiously, but she was up and was moving! The Vet called her the miracle dog.
A little manual muscle therapy work was introduced to continue to release the lower back muscles, ease tension in the legs, and release the hip flexors. |
By 4 weeks, she was moving around well but was still 'dragging' her right hind foot.
Rock Taping was used to help stimulate neural messaging to that paw. It provided a little more help to the hindquarter, assisting balance and facilitating a steadier gate when walking. All good for an unstable back. |
I love a happy, healthy tail and so it is, 3 years on we still have our Jess and she's still moving around well and completely independently. |
|
She still loves chicken absolutely every kind and all other food groups. |
After becoming a qualified Practitioner in the Emmett4 Dogs Technique, in Melbourne, I'm now able to introduce this amazing technique into the clinic.
It's a very gentle Muscle Release Therapy, which was modified for animals from the human work of Ross Emmett, and is taught and practised in 40 countries around the world.
The Canine appointments are carried out in a private animal dedicated area, adjacent to the human clinic.
Let me help you with a happy, healthy tail for your dog, I'd love to meet your best fur friend!
** Please note, that for many conditions it is advisable to consult your vet and receive a full diagnosis before commencing any other treatment.
